Village Partnership Program
Empowering communities with resources, support, and opportunities for sustainable development.
In May 2022, we began working alongside the village of Algodon—a Haitian batey (pronounced BAH-tay). A batey (plural _bateyes_) is a shantytown where sugarcane cutters, mostly Haitian migrants, reside. These bateyes are found exclusively in Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Our ministry in the Dominican Republic focuses on the _Village Partnership Program_, which serves Haitian bateyes such as Balarona, Algodon, Altagracia, and Los Robles, as well as impoverished Dominican villages like Don Bosco and Pueblo Nuevo. On the surface, Haitian bateyes might seem similar to poor Dominican villages, but a deeper understanding reveals significant differences rooted in history.
Though the Dominican Republic and Haiti share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, the two countries are culturally and historically distinct. Dominicans are Latin, with a deep pride in their Spanish heritage, while Haitians speak Creole and are largely descendants of freed African slaves.
In the early 1900s, Haitian sugarcane cutters, drawn by the promise of work, began migrating seasonally to the Dominican Republic. These workers were willing to endure the grueling labor for low wages, a task most Dominicans were unwilling to take on. Over time, many of these workers decided not to return to Haiti after the season ended, creating a large, permanent Haitian population in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, this population was often unwelcome, leading to deep-rooted challenges.
This is where Talent Youth Corps International & Mountain of Glory Ministry step in. Our mission is to serve these communities, offering both practical assistance and a message of hope to those living in Haitian bateyes and poor Dominican villages.
